Teenage vandals start fires, take drugs and urinate on staircases on an estate where complaints about yobbish behaviour have gone up ten times in a year.
Residents on the notorious Frampton Park Estate hit out at the police and council for failing to protect them from louts who make their lives a “misery”.
Last year 40 reports were made to the council, a tenfold increase from just four complaints in 2010.
Martin Coventry, 51, who cleans the estate, claimed police were often called to sort out problems but ended up “having a laugh” with the trouble-makers and not moving them along.
“A lot of young people hang around the block smoking, mainly near Capel House. I have to clean up after them and they burn the walls, smoke drugs and urinate on staircases. I would say 90 per cent of people come in from other estates,” he said.
One woman complained nearby estates had been improved but problems had been left to fester on Frampton Park Estate.
Claudia Weiberzyke, 39 said youths come in and hang around until late, smoking cannabis and bringing in “status dogs” to intimidate others.
The stay-at-home mum, said: “People are afraid to stand up about this issue but they need to speak out. Most of the boys causing trouble are all right when you stop and speak to them but it has got a lot worse.
“There was joy-riding going on last Friday and the council aren’t doing much to sort stuff out. There used to be speed bumps near here to stop that sort of thing but they took them away.”
“In the summer it was terrible. We have a heroin addict who lives a few doors down and he always brings his friends round to do drugs. I worry about my kids.”
Hackney council said it had improved its complaints procedure.
I wonder what the authors of this Web Site really now about our estate? Of cause reports have increased as Hackney Homes are encouraging residents to report any ASB so that they can deal with it together with the police. I know for sure that as a result of our complaints, the police have made several arrests and a number of people are being prosecuted.
I live on the estate, have not witnessed this joy riding you speak of or heard any one talk about it. I have lived here since 1993, every year I see big improvements on the estate, I feel safe here.
Once upon a time, I did believe that the hackney council and the police are not doing enough to combat the anti social behaviour of young people in the Frampton Park estate.
This was until i joined the local Tennants Residents Association.
I was however pleasantly surprised after joining the TRA to see and also become involved in the many ways through which the Safer Neighbourhood team and the council are tackling the issue.
Late last year for instance, the Council reached out to the TRA and the Frampton Park Baptist church to discuss the then closed down Estate Youth Club which has in the previous few attracted all sorts of young people from outside the estate coming into the estate causing all sorts of problems for local people.
Hackney Quest; a charity based in Well street and with over 20 years experience of working with young people was then commisioned to start youth based activities at the centre.
It is still early days but current feedbacks showed a new and vibrant youth club with various activities planned for young people, aimed at taking them off the street culture.
However, I wish to use this medium to call on more local residents to join the TRA. The TRA is the voice of the local residents. At most meetings we have the Safer neighbourhood team, Hackney homes officials and the council officials in attendance to answer local people’s questions while also telling local people what they are doing to combat anti social behaviours on our estate.
