A mystery campaigner is flagging up the problem of dog fouling – by placing paper flags in turds left on the streets.
The secret poo protester is using cocktail sticks to make mini banners bearing messy messages.
The flags have been spotted across Hackney, including two next to Homerton Overground Station. In De Beauvoir, dog poo is being circled with chalk, with messages reading “clean it up!”
The crude crusade comes as the council prepares to step up efforts to tackle dog fouling.
Council officers will be spending more time on the streets handing out fines to people who do not pick up their dog’s business.
This is not the first time flags have flown over doggy business. Manchester, Lincoln and Norfolk are just three of many other places where similar messages have been spotted in the last few years.
In 2005, police in Germany were forced to send out extra patrols after flags bearing the face of US President George Bush were stuck into 3,000 piles of poo nationwide.
In Hackney, the identity of the phantom flag-flier is still unknown, but the council’s crackdown could see streets become cleaner.
Councillor Sophie Linden, Cabinet Member for Sustainability and Consumer Services said: “A small minority of dog owners in the borough are behaving irresponsibly by not keeping their dogs under control.”
