Art column – what’s going on in Hackney this weekend

Everyone’s been talking about Radio 1 Hackney Weekend after Jay-Z became the latest artist booked to perform, so sign up to the summer event.

But let’s not forget there is a lot of other stuff going on in London’s lively East End, and with the sunny weather set to continue let me guide you through Hackney’s hottest happenings.

Art

If you are a fan of expressionism then an exhibition based around Matisse’s famous painting, The Piano Lesson, is a must-see. At Vilma Gold gallery just off Hackney Road, the show exhibits work inspired by the French Master’s painting of his living room.

New York artist Charles Atlas, London-based Nicholas Byrne and Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri will all be exhibiting. Atlas has produced a film of a fluttering dove for the event.

The exhibition is free and is on until April 1

Books

Book-lovers in search of the perfect read get down to the St Peter’s Church book sale all day on Saturday. Look through classic novels while enjoying the tea, coffee, soup and rolls on offer.

The sale is free and will be held on 24 Saturday

Theatre

Drama lovers can opt for more civilised night out with a production of A Clockwork Orange at Arcola Theatre.

The show is on until 21 April and tickets cost £18 / £15 with concessions.

Music

Spanner Jazz Punks' Dan Spanner
For a wild night rock out to the creatively named Spanner Jazz Punks on Saturday at trendy Dalston venue Passing Clouds. Branding itself as a “spring equinox forest party” the epic troupe will be doing what they do best – performing a frenzied mix of ska, pop and jazz.

The gig costs £8, £5 before 10pm and will be on Saturday 24 March

Make sure you make the most of this week and all its arty offerings – summer is well on its way!
