Suspected World War Two shell found in Haggerston

A suspected World War Two shell was discovered in Haggerston today by a group of builders.

The workmen from Angel C Developments were renovating a property in Albion Drive when they discovered what they initially thought was an unexploded bomb but was actually an “inert shell”.

The builders put the shell into a skip in the street while they rang their bosses for instruction.

Builder Brian Herarty, 31, told Hackney Post: “It was a Romanian guy who originally found it. He lifted it up and was like, ‘what do I do with this?’ He was running around with the bloody thing.

“I had a bit of a shock, as you would, it’s a bomb. We decided to leave it on top of the skip. Maybe not the best place to leave it.

“I had a feeling it wasn’t live because there was a gun cartridge in there too. I feel like it was probably someone who was into their guns, or was part of the navy and kept it as a memento. There’s a light in there too that looks like it was taken from a submarine. Boys and their toys.

“The police officer that arrived here first started yelling, ‘get out of here, get out of here!’ Then the guy just came, grabbed it and walked away.”

Police were called and the area was briefly sealed off and the object was removed.

At 1:47pm Hackney Police confirmed that they had resolved the situation in a tweet.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police reassured Hackney Post that the object was an “inert shell that would not go boom”.
