A former UKIP candidate has voiced his outrage about Homerton University Hospital’s “politically correct prejudice”, after the institution put portraits of black and Asian doctors on display in the main entrance.
Alan Craig, who ran for election in Brent North during May’s general election, wrote a controversial blog post after visitors to the hospital raised issues with the exhibition.
“Political correctness has developed into a putrefying ideology of propaganda and untruth promoted by the elite political class and liberal opinion-formers,” he wrote on his blog, Alan’s Angle. “It is in-your-face untruth, ‘diversity’ gone mad and it reflects blatant prejudice, discrimination and, yes, racism by the country’s major caring institution.”
The hospital denied these claims through its in-house magazine, explaining that the portraits of residents from the 1970s were chosen as part of a black history exhibition created in association with Hackney Museum.
Mr Craig told the Hackney Post: “The shock is that there were absolutely no white people selected, yet Hackney is traditionally a white working class area.
“It is the hospital’s multicultural politically-correct prejudice against the indigenous population that air-brushes them out of the picture.”
A Homerton resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “Maybe the description of the collection needs to be clearer at either end of the line of pictures.
“I think the hospital does a great job of using its walls to represent the local area and people and to give visitors something interesting to look at.”
Mark Purcell, a spokesperson for Homerton University Hospital, said: “The comment about the lack of white faces being racist doesn’t deserve a comment or response.”
