The Salvation Army has opened a shop on Cazenove Road – close to the resting place of founder William Booth.
The shop, which opened last Saturday, is based at 9 Cazenove Road on the former site of the Cazenove Club, a short walk from Booth’s grave in Abney Park.
Ruth Gray, responsible for overseeing their Clapton and Stoke Newington branches as Salvation Army captain, said: “It felt very wrong that where our founder was buried there was no Salvation Army presence in the area.”
The new location comprises a coffee shop and a charity store, and will host Christian prayer meetings on Wednesday evenings.
However, Gray encouraged members of Cazenove’s various religious communities to make use of the shop.
“Have a cup of coffee with us. You talk to us about your religion; we’ll talk to you about ours.”
