A retired teacher has started a café where homeless people can eat on a “pay what you can” basis.
Judith Hale and her team prepare home-cooked meals for under £5 for those who can afford it but ask for a contribution, however small, from the homeless.
“If they can pay ten pence that’s lovely with me, but it’s something. I expect a little donation.
“Today we had one man come in and offer us eight pence – it doesn’t sound like a lot and it’s not – but we don’t want to be taken for granted,” she said.
The café makes money from customers paying full price and Ms Hale uses the profit to subsidise the meals for the homeless.
Many of the customers who eat at the café pay extra for their food to supplement the charitable side of the venture.
The café is run from the crypt under St. Peter’s Church, De Beauvoir, and is open on Thursday and Friday lunchtimes from 12.30 to 4.
