Iconic Hoxton Hall gets lottery grant

An historic East End music hall is closer to completing its restoration after receiving £1.8m National Lottery funding.

Hoxton Hall is one of six projects to share £22.5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The Grade-II listed building was built nearly 150 years ago and is one of only four similar venues remaining in the UK.

The funding will go towards restoring the hall’s original features and curating a permanent exhibition focused on unveiling the “culture of the East End”.

The Victorian venue houses studios, rehearsal rooms and a 120-seat theatre that are used for shows and concerts which attract around 12,000 visitors per year.

It’s hoped that visitors will increase annually to 40,000 once the restoration is finished but the building needs a further £425,000 in order to complete the full renovation.

Hoxton Hall’s group director, Hayley White, said: “This is a landmark day for us. We can really raise the curtain for this beautiful old music hall now that the Heritage Lottery Fund is our partner.

Carole Souter, chief executive of HLF, said: “Eighteen years of National Lottery funding has enabled us to invest over £5bn in our heritage. Thanks to Lottery players, we’re celebrating this milestone with grants for a number of wonderful projects. Between them they illustrate the breadth and depth of the UK’s heritage.”
