A work by late architect Ernö Goldfinger is among the nominees for the Hackney Design Awards.
Haggerston School in Weymouth Terrace was the only English secondary school to be designed by an internationally known architect.
Celebrated modernist Goldfinger, who once tried to sue James Bond writer Ian Fleming over the name of his fictitious character, designed the school built over 40 years ago.
After a two-year refurbishment completed earlier this year, the Grade-II listed building has been shortlisted for the People’s Choice category in the Hackney Design Awards, but faces competition from 18 other entries across the borough.
Jennifer Gavin, head of projects, divisional support and building control at Hackney Council said:
“Haggerston School was of particular interest to the judging panel due to its fascinating heritage as the only example of Erno Goldfinger’s work in Hackney.”
“The Design Awards are a means to increase awareness of good design in our urban environment and the school is a perfect example of that.”
Organised by Hackney Council, the awards – now in their fifth year – showcase the borough’s commitment to celebrating innovative architecture and design. Since 2004, more than 155 projects have been nominated, with 37 winning awards, commendations or mentions.
This year, the council looked for entries demonstrating quality, visual amenity, innovation and sustainability.
Voting for the People’s Choice category closes on Monday 5 November, and the winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on 22 November.
