There was a strong turnout outside Hackney Town Hall today for a protest against ISIS and their continued attacks on the Kurdish town of Kobane.
Organised over social media, the lunchtime demonstration was attended by members of Hackney Unison, council staff, activists and the local Kurdish and Turkish community.
Glyn Harries, Unison representative and activist, said: “A lot of Kurds live in Hackney. They came as refugees in the 1990s.
“We in Britain should support justice”, he added. “ISIS is a danger that has affected many young people in this country.”
Protesters held up placards with hashtags such as #soskobane, #isupportkobane and #uniteagainstISIS.
Mr Harries said that he thought the protest had been a success. “Having another protest there at the same time really helped to raise publicity”, he added.
Today’s solidarity demonstration with Kobane was just one of many held in London over the last month.
Thousands protested against ISIS in Parliament Square on 11 October, resulting in clashes between protesters and police.
Global demonstrations will take place on 1 November as part of an ongoing rally of solidarity with Kobane, after tens of thousands have fled the town in the last few months of fighting.
