A by-election has been set for 3 May after Councillor Alan Laing — who has served Hackney Central for a decade — announced on the Hackney Central Labour blog that he will resign this month to take up a new job in Scotland.
Ben Hayhurst, a barrister, will represent the ward as the Labour candidate. In a separate statement on the blog, he said: “I am proud to have been chosen by local Labour members to contest the by-election.
“With your support on 3 May I want to continue that work as part of a strong Labour team alongside councillors Samantha Lloyd and Vincent Stops. I understand the issues facing the area, and want to continue to make Hackney Central a better place to live.”
