A Hackney woman has fronted a campaign to collect donations for Syrian women for charity Hand in Hand.

Latifa Fifi Nouibat and her friends held a charity collection and donation drive at Rushmore Primary School as part of the Big Aid Drop last weekend.

They collected sanitary towels, nappies, baby wipes and children’s activity books to donate to the drive, which sends goods to the poverty-stricken country three times a year.

“I am beyond grateful for their kind generosity,” she said. “The situation in Syria is horrendous and deeply upsetting, and I thought, instead of just eating cakes, let’s really do something for other women in need.”

She said that people travelled far distances to donate, and some people went to the shops and “bought a tenner worth of sanitary pads. That was fantastic and I wanted to hug them all.”

On the other hand, Ms Nouibat feels saddened that some people that visited could not spare a bit of change. “Could they not think that there are other Mums on the other side of the world that are truly suffering and having to watch their children die?

“I think those people are too busy watching their house prices rise instead of being in the real world. Is this the new Hackney?” She also said that she contacted Superdrug’s head office to donate sanitary towels, but her request was turned down.

Ms Nouibat previously raised almost £500 for Self Help Africa, encouraging friends and the public to donate desperately needed women’s sanitary products to developing areas.

Hackney residents can continue to donate supplies for Hand in Hand with Syria until Saturday. For more information, click here.
