Parents and school staff are facing the closure of Oldhill Community School under plans by Hackney Council. ?
The school will either close, or merge with Harrington Hill Primary School, Mount Pleasant Lane. Six primary schools across the borough could be hit with mergers or closures due to a fall in pupil numbers and tightened council budget. ?
Father William Campbell-Taylor of St Thomas’ Church, said: “It is a massive hit for the community.
Councillor Antoinette Bramble, Deputy Mayor, said: “Our council is facing incredible financial challenges. It is our role to find the best possible solutions to make sure our schools are fit for the future.”
Nearly 25 per cent of all primary school places were vacant in May 2024 according to Hackney Council. This is because birth rates have been falling; there has been a restriction on housing benefits, and people have decided to relocate due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
The council’s consultation will run to 19 November. If passed, plans for the school to close will take effect on 31 August 2025.?
