Free tickets to an online jazz concert have been offered to Hackney Residents as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. Those who attend will have the chance to experience Charles Mingus’ album, “The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady” alongside visuals and performances in an online space. The event will take place on Thursday 19th November 2020 at 8pm.
The listening party is a collaboration between cross-disciplinary performance company, CLOD Ensemble and members of NU Civilisation orchestra. It is an invitation for viewers to listen to the album while watching dancers and performers, “unlocking powerful elements such as its complex structure, beautiful melodies, visceral emotions, moods and feelings” say organisers CLOD Ensemble. It will include guest performances from residents of Shoreditch and Hoxton and commentary from MOBO-Nominated Peter Edwards, Gary Crosby OBE from Nu Civilisation Orchestra; and Clod Ensemble Artistic Directors Suzy Willson & Paul Clark. CLOD Ensemble Director, Suzy Willson says, “what you will see on the 19th November is the result of an extraordinary collaborative effort. In rehearsal for all of Clod Ensemble’s work, to help us listen deeply to music we move to it and watch others moving to it. The Listening Party will be a celebration of both the music and the movement it inspires in us, offering a new perspective to this incredible album.”
The listening party is supported by Hackney Council’s Shoreditch and Hoxton Arts Fund.
“Hackney’s creative community is second to none and the online Listening Party project graphically demonstrates this” says Guy Nicholson Cllr for Planning, Culture and Inclusive Economy, “from Hackney Council’s perspective it is a real privilege to be able to support such creative and innovative work that reaches out into our community, connecting us to each other and giving us all a spectacle to look at, listen to and be inspired by.”
