John Legend is famous for being an award-winning singer on the biggest stages in America. Now his influence is making its way from Beverley Hills to Stamford Hill, through a collaboration with Hackney-based boutique fashion designer Alice Acreman.
The range consists of two kimono robes, bow ties and pocket squares, all of which pay homage to Legend in different ways.
Acreman, who designs and sells printed silk clothing, has released a new range of menswear in partnership with the “all of me” singer, known by many simply as “The Legend”.
The unlikely link-up came courtesy of online marketplace “Etsy”, where Alice sells her designs.
“When I told my friend that I was partnering with John Legend, she thought I was joking,” said the designer, who has run her own silks business since she left Bournemouth Arts University in 2014.
“His star sign is Capricorn, so there are a few nods to that in the prints. And I included a moth flying to the moon in one to depict someone chasing their dreams and aiming high, which obviously John has done,” she said. “He’s even kept the samples I sent for the promotional shoot, so hopefully he’s at home lounging around in them somewhere.”
Even though her work has now been worn by one of the best-dressed men in Los Angeles, Alice said that the best element of her job is its more personal side: “The highlight […] is when I get emails or reviews from customers which say something heartfelt about what my piece means to them.”
Alice’s John Legend collaboration, and her wider range, is available on Etsy, and she will be selling her silks at the Clapton Country Club on 2 December.
