A third of each sale from Atom Gallery’s latest exhibition will go towards supporting the Hackney Foodbank.
The exhibition, titled “BOLL*CKS & PYJAMAS”, will showcase artwork of dogs and cats. “It’s a play [on words]” explained gallery co-founder Richard Pendry, “the cat’s pyjamas and the dog’s boll*cks, both of which mean ‘the best’, so we combined them.”
According to Pendry, who runs the gallery with his partner Mark, the main aim behind the exhibition is to raise money for Hackney Foodbank: “We want to do something in the local community rather than something broader. There’s obviously a huge issue with food poverty, food banks are not something that we should really have; they’re a sad indictment of the current government to be honest. We just do what we can.”
Earlier this year Hackney Foodbank reported a 70 per cent increase in the number of people using its resources and a 23 per cent decrease in food donations between January and August, compared with the same period last year.
The exhibition will feature work from over 40 artists, many of whom have donated their art to support the cause. It’s not an exclusively Hackney affair either, “we work with artists all over the country. We’ve got artists contributing from Glasgow, from Brighton, from various places around the country. I’d say probably about half of them are in Hackney,” Pendry added.
