Stoke Newington pub The Leconfield has been shortlisted for Time Out’s first ever Love London Awards just one year after its reopening.
The pub’s shortlisting was announced on Sunday evening, after it was nominated by an anonymous patron.
The Leconfield, on Green Lanes, Stoke Newington, opened in August 2013 after a major renovation project to restore the building to it’s original 1920s architecture and design.
Current manager Jan Peck said: “It was an absolute bombsite. Before we started renovating it was dark, painted over and just uninviting.”
The venue changed hands in 2013, and was renovated over a period of three months, from May to August. Previously, it had been a popular gay bar and club.
“It was successful in its day, but it was time for something new. Before it was a club that would be playing loud music until 3am. Now the locals love it. We get a lot of families and young professionals coming in and we love dogs!”
The new pub has been stripped bare to reveal the original brickwork, which dates back to the late 19th century.
“Everything had to be taken out. We kept some of the original features but everything from the old bar had to go. It’s been a lot of work, but it’s really paying off now.”
