Campaigners say not enough is being done to protect cyclists on Hackney roads as Curtain Road junction is named the second most dangerous for bikes across the capital.
The so-called “Shoreditch Triangle” is the second most dangerous junction in London, according to a new report.
The junction of Great Eastern Street and Curtain Road was the site of nine serious, and nine slight, cyclist casualties between 2019 and 2023, said the latest ranking of London’s most dangerous junctions.
A spokesperson for Hackney Cycling Campaign told the Hackney Post: “You’ve got to be experienced and have your wits around you… it shouldn’t be like an extreme sport.
“Hopefully the ranking will have spurred people on. TfL need to do something, […] but it’s not a trivial job.”
Compiled from collision data held by emergency services, the list of dangerous junctions was released by the London Cycling Campaign as part of a wider call for action.
Tom Fyans, Chief Executive of the LCC, said: “Until London takes bolder action, people will keep being killed.”
Penny Rees, TfL’s head of healthy streets investment, said in a statement: “We welcome this research and will be working closely with campaigners, councils and local communities across the capital to improve road safety and end the devastation caused by collisions.”
TfL also provided data showing road fatalities have reduced four times more in London than the rest of the UK.
However, publicly available TfL data reveals the number itself is increasing, particularly when serious injuries are also considered.
A total of 372 cyclists were killed or seriously injured on London roads in 2005. In 2023, the same total was 941.
While travelling by car is the most dangerous when slight casualties are included, pedestrians are most likely to suffer serious or fatal injuries.
Yet in Hackney last year, it was more dangerous to cycle than to be on foot; 58 fatal or serious casualties were recorded for bicycles compared with only 39 for pedestrians.
