Petchey Academy pupils in fundraising jam-boree

Students from Petchey Academy will be selling jam and chutney at the Whole Foods Market in Stoke Newington tomorrow.

Year 7s and 8s from the academy’s after-school cooking club have made their own produce from ingredients grown in the school’s garden.

The project, which involves three other schools in London, aims to make children aware of where their food comes from.

“It’s a really nice project,” said Sarah Cenci, Lead of Food at the Petchey Academy. “We’re hoping now to grow more of our own fruit and vegetables from the garden, make things regularly and sell them to the school.”

The pupils involved have also designed their own labels for their products and were treated to a workshop by Natalie Coleman, 2013 winner of MasterChef.

“It was inspiring for the children to have her there,” said Erica Mitchell, Marketing Specialist of the Whole Foods Market in Stoke Newington.

“The brilliant thing about the project is that it contains an entrepreneurial dimension rooted in helping children understand the journey from seed to supermarket.”

The pupils will be selling their jams and chutneys between 11-1pm tomorrow and all profits will go to the participating schools.
