The decline of gay nightlife in London is a growing concern to the LBGT community, but “the sapphic musical comedy show of your dreams” brought relief.
“Diary of a Gay Disaster” played to audiences at The Arcola Theatre last week, with the final performance on Saturday night ending in a standing ovation.
The show explored queerness in 2024, covering everything from ambiguous friendships to messy breakups. One song, called “Is she gay or just a hipster?”, pokes fun at how queer fashion has been adopted into mainstream culture.
Rachel Mailer, the show’s writer, said that the idea behind the show was to “take queer experiences that can be really tough, and to turn them on their head and present them in a very comedic way.
“Each song is a parody of itself and the genre that it comes from, including disco, country and pop punk.”
The Arcola Theatre focuses on bringing original and emerging talent to East London. Their Youth Theatre and Queer Collective initiatives focus on making theatre accessible to these groups in particular.
