Housing Panel wants your views on potential housing plans

A group of housing experts has launched a survey to assess the public’s views on what kind of residences they want to see built in Hackney.

The Intermediate Housing Panel wants to hear from key workers and those on middle incomes who live or work in Hackney.

The survey is accessible through the council’s website for people to share their views. It closes on 10 April.

Intermediate housing is aimed at people who don’t qualify for social housing but can’t afford private rent.

Professor Christine Whitehead, chair of the Intermediate Housing Panel, said they want to hear from anyone who feels they would “benefit from this sort of housing, why and what type of housing they’d like to live in”.

Demand for affordable housing is growing. Hackney had the most significant rise in house prices between 2011-2021, with prices up by 108 per cent. In December last year, the average price for a first-time buyer was £584,000.

Professor Whitehead expects to hear from “those living out of the borough who are looking to get in”.

The panel, made up of academics, developers and planning experts, first met in October 2024, and has studied the types of housing that could be suitable to build in Hackney.

The panel will make its final recommendations to Hackney Council in May.
