School children in Hackney have a new place to study following the opening of a state-of-the-art building in Hoxton.

On Friday 26 November, the City of London Academy, Shoreditch Park moved its operations from a temporary building of three years to a new location on Hyde Road.

Speaking to the Hackney Post, Arles said: “At our old site, we had a tiny playground barely big enough to hold one year group, and one hall that served as [a] canteen, sports hall and assembly hall.”

“In our new premises we have a multi-use games area on the roof, multiple playgrounds, a gym, enormous sports hall, main auditorium and activity studio, to name just a few.”

£40 million of investment in the future of our young people

The new building increases the school’s capacity from 540 to 1200, giving more places to children in the area.

In attendance at the opening ceremony were Principal Holly Arles and Mayor Philip Glanville, who cut the ribbon. Several of the school’s pupils gave a presentation about what they have accomplished in the three years since the school first opened in 2017.

Mayor Glanville said: “The new Shoreditch Park Academy represents our continuing ambition for education in Hackney, seeing over £40m of investment not just into one of the finest school buildings in the country, but even more importantly, the future of our young people.”
