Hackney Cricket Club captain is hoping for a different council decision on London Fields this summer
Hackney Cricket Club are calling on the council to support a return to cricket on London Fields this summer.
For the first time in decades, cricket was unable to be played on the space last summer owing to the council’s worries of overcrowding.
The current club captain, Edgar Maddicott, said that he understood last year’s decision. “Considering we’re in Hackney, lots of people don’t have gardens and that sort of stuff, so the council clearly had to do something, especially after three months of lockdown,” he said.
“The decision was made at Hackney council, without consultation of any side in the North East London League.”
Restrictions, such as a ban on alcohol, had to be put in place on London Fields last summer due to a significant rise in anti-social behaviour.
There is usually a six-a-side charity tournament in June on London Fields, which didn’t place last year. Maddicott is hoping that a relaxation of restrictions will allow that and other games to take place.
“The tournament not taking place was a shame, especially as it raises money for St. Joseph’s Hospice. It would just be really good for the community if we can get out and play,” he said.
