A collective of architects, music promoters and hip hop enthusiasts launched their first event in Shoreditch in a bid to get more young people interested in architecture.
In Situ was started by Simon Keeling and Seb Benson, two architecture students from the University of Sheffield who feel that the profession fails to engage younger generations. The event at BL-NK included performances from local hip hop artists against a backdrop of In Situ’s own set design installation.
“[There are] loads of architecture-related events in Hackney but they are all similar, they cater to the same crowd,” said Benson.
“The hope is to converge these two different cultures, create some new interactions, and cross-genre collaborations,” Keeling added.
Jungle VIP and Carter Dozer from OthaSoul, a hip hop band that performed at the event, are supporting the unusual partnership.
“It’s always nice to fuse different disciplines and in this case it was nice to have someone pay attention to the stage where we’re performing,” they said.
Zoe Hamilton, who attended the event, added: “The installation in the venue was super interesting … I definitely want to go to their next event.”
All the proceeds will be used to fund more events and a magazine showing people and their ideas for In Situ.
