Hackney is known for its diverse culture and cuisine, but a shocking secret about the borough’s cafés and restaurants lies behind that pleasant façade.
The Hackney Post can reveal that a whopping 20 Hackney restaurants have been awarded a “zero” for food hygiene by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) – meaning their standards are in urgent need of improvement. Take a look at our interactive map and see if your favourite eatery makes the zero-rated list.

Restaurants on the FSA’s blacklist include Damascu Bite, on Shoreditch High Street, Wu Chinese Cuisine, on Upper Clapton Road, and Tad Restaurant, on Mare Street.

The FSA’s ratings are based on how hygienically food is handled, the condition and structure of the buildings and how the business is managed to ensure food safety.
In addition to the 20 zero-rated restaurants, staggeringly a further 133 were given a score of just one – meaning major improvement is necessary.
