The council installed pop-up stalls across the borough last week to educate the public on hate crimes, as part of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.
The stalls provided posters and leaflets on how to report hate crimes, and stressed that reporting is crucial as victims can receive support and help the police in tracking down perpetrators.
“Under-reporting is a challenge in every aspect,” Steve Davidson, a worker at hate crime pop-up stall on Bradbury Street said. “What we are trying to do here is to raise awareness on hate crimes. This week is about giving information on reporting hate crimes and making people comfortable about reaching out to the police.”
Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas OBE, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Regulatory Services said: “No one should feel afraid because of who they are or who they love. We will challenge hate wherever it arises and continue to work together to make Hackney no place for hate.”
