Dockless bikes to return to Hackney

Hackney Council are ending its suspension of dockless bikes in Cazenove this month. They will introduce over 500 of them across the borough, in partnership with operators Beryl and JUMP, to ensure responsible bike sharing.

The bikes were banned in July after being repeatedly dumped on pavements, making it hard for pedestrians and people with mobility impairments to get around.

As part of the new deal, both Beryl and JUMP will fund dedicated parking areas for the bikes to ensure that pavements and public spaces remain clear. Customers who leave the vehicles outside of these areas will face fines.

Cazenove residents have welcomed the change, hailing it as a positive move towards better air quality and physical health.

Tom, a local cyclist, said that although he will continue to use his own bike, he sees the initiative as a good way to get more people on the road.

Janette, a concerned grandparent, agreed with the council’s move towards green transport. She said: “I don’t want to see my children grow up with pollution.”

As part of the scheme, operators Beryl and JUMP will make a financial contribution to the council to help it manage the scheme and promote cycling to residents.

The initiative comes amid talks of a London-wide byelaw to prevent dockless bikes being dumped on pavements.
