East London is full of great arts venues, and Hackney is no exception. There are scores of art galleries, a few niche museums, and some big-name theatres. Here, we’ve mapped all of the great venues in Hackney, but first, some highlights…

The Geffrye Museum
The Geffrye Museum is unique in that it’s a museum which reflects the “history of the home” – interior design and garden landscaping and design through the centuries. It houses a permanent exhibition of eleven rooms which span 400 years between 1600 and 2000, and a garden which is separated into different periods to reflect the period rooms. Additionally, there’s an 18th-century almshouse, which has been restored to its original state. It provides a window into the lives of the poor in Georgian England.

Sutton House
Sutton House was built in 1535 by a courtier of King Henry VIII, named Sir Ralph Sadleir. The house is now a beautiful example of Tudor architecture right in the heart of Hackney. The house contains oak-panelled rooms, a beautifully painted staircase, original carved fireplaces, and a charming courtyard. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can always pop in for a cup of tea and a cake in the Georgian-style tea room.
Cost: £3.50 for adults, £1 for children. Free to visit the shop and tea rooms
Opening times: Varies each week – check the website

Hackney Empire
This is perhaps one of the most well-known and well-loved venues in Hackney. Hackney Empire hosts great musical acts – ranging from local unknown artists, to big names like Skunk Anansie – as well as comedy shows and dance performances. They also hold workshops, under the ‘creative learning’ umbrella. It’s home to a community choir, skills workshops for young creatives, and young people interested in performance can join the theatre company or take part in their summer development programme.
