Snow has already fallen in one theatre this Christmas, as a new play by an award-winning writer hits the stage.
A Christmas-themed modern day re-imagining of the Pied Piper is showing at The Yard theatre in Hackney Wick, written by the theatre’s founder and artistic director Jay Miller.
Drawing on the mythical tale and adding a panto twist, the Pied Piper sees the rats come back to Hamelin in a play that involves the whole audience, not to mention a tonne of fake snow.
Describing his inspiration for the play, with a female Pied Piper played by actor Chris Bailey, Jay said: “I’m really interested in the role of outsiders in society and how they change things.
“The Pied Piper is a story that has been in my consciousness for a while. I like the idea of it being a story that I don’t really understand and that lack of logic I quite like, it being a slightly moral tale but in a darker sense.”
Mr Miller is also celebrating being named on The Hospital Club 100 List 2013 of the most innovative and influential people in the creative industries, in association with the Guardian.
He said: “It was great, I was really surprised, it’s a really nice validation of what we’ve achieved here.
“Although it’s my name on the list I think it goes without saying that there have been a huge number of people who have contributed to The Yard’s success and I think it’s important that it’s not just me, that it’s The Yard as a whole.”
