The elderly woman who was killed in a collision with a lorry on Lower Clapton Road on Wednesday morning has been named.
Rose Elizabeth Furlong was knocked down by a 22-wheel LaFarge lorry at around 10.30am as she was crossing the road.
Police officers and paramedics from the London Air Ambulance attended the accident, which occurred at the A107 Urswick Road junction, but the 83-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 54-year-old man who was arrested last week in relation to the incident has been released on bail.
The road was closed in both directions until early Wednesday evening.
Mahe Georgio, 40, the manager of nearby Castles Estate Agent, said: “We think that the lorry tried to turn around the island in the middle of the junction, was unable to make it round and then hit the woman as it tried to reverse away.
“Lorries just can’t get round that corner. We heard a big noise and then a loud horn and saw the lorry across the road.
“I can’t believe what has happened; it’s really upsetting. We don’t want one of our clients or any local residents being in an accident like this.
“We saw them trying to resuscitate the woman at the scene. It was really awful. [The paramedics] were fighting hard to save her life and I have to give them credit for that.”
Officers arrested the lorry driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and held him at an east London police station pending further investigation.
Lower Clapton Road was closed in both directions between Ponsford Street and Cricketfield Road until early Wednesday evening as a result of the incident.
