CLUBS
Mister Saturday at St John at Hackney – Sat 5 March
Brooklyn NY DJs Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, otherwise known as Mister Saturday, are known for their early doors club nights, which run from 5pm til 11pm.
On previous trips across the Atlantic, the pair have opted for the Oval Space in Cambridge Heath. But this Saturday they will fill the pews of St John at Hackney with their sun-filled tunes, promising sacrilegious revellers “the best time you’ll have in a church in 2016”.
GIGS
Jake Bugg at Village Underground – Mon 7 March
Jake Bugg turned 22 last week, two days after announcing the upcoming release of his third album, On My One, to be released in June.
The Nottingham-born folk-rock singer-songwriter will take to the stage at Village Underground, Shoreditch, on Monday to showcase his new material in an intimate gig, including his new single Gimme The Love. He’s upped the tempo, cranked up the volume and seems to have been listening to a lot of Arctic Monkeys.
COMEDY
Comedy for Calais at Arcola Theatre – Sun 6 March
Big names on the comedy circle, including Stewart Lee and Lou Sanders, will perform at the Arcola Theatre on Sunday to raise money for Crew for Calais, a team of showbiz professionals who provide shelter and housing for refugees in the Calais ‘Jungle’ camp.
In a column for The Guardian in September, Lee wrote about trying to incorporate the refugee crisis into his stand-up. He decided it was “too brutal to say aloud to paying punters who had innocently, booked a babysitter for a fun night out in good faith”. Something to look forward to.
OPERA
English Touring Opera at Hackney Empire – Sat 5, Thu 10, Fri 11, Sat 12 March
The Hackney Empire is the first stop on English Touring Opera’s three month criss-cross across the UK. The company will perform four shows, starting on Saturday with Gluck’s 1779 opera Iphigénie en Tauride, and ending with two performances of the (slightly less obscure) Don Giovanni by Mozart on 11 and 12 March. Tickets start at £11
