We wanted to know what’s buzzing in Hackney. So we took to Twitter to find out.
Over 2,500 tweets on the #Hackney hashtag paint a pretty interesting picture of the biggest stories of the past week. Here’s what we learned.
Two big Hackney news stories dominated this week on Twitter:
1. “I’m the Ripper” serial rapist sentenced.
Serial rapist Duwayne Shaun Henry was found guilty of several brutal rapes, and was sentenced to life. This horrifying news from last week couldn’t fail to be shared by many on social media. Words like “guilty”, “life”, “serial”, @MetPoliceUK, “jailed”, and of course “Duwayne” reflect that.

2. “Save the Chesham” campaigners rejoicing.
Campaign @SaveTheChesham makes a major appearance in the word cloud, and no wonder. This two-year-struggle to save the historic Hackney pub had a significant victory two weeks ago. Campaigners celebrated after a Hackney Council ruling that grants the pub special protection, which means new hope for the local boozer finally reopening
The struggle for the Chesham Arms has gone on so long and so tirelessly it’s even become a verb:
We are now a verb. To Chesham = to mount an unrelenting campaign to protect a pub via the planning system. A @hackneycouncil Cllr said so

We also made a word cloud of all the hashtags that Hackney folks use most often, to see what issues are on our minds. Here’s what we got out of it:
3. The borough’s hipsters are all living up to their stereotypes.

Hanging out at #popup bars and restaurants, checking out cool #streetart around Shoreditch and using the perfect #hipstamatic filter to take retro photos of meals at their #supperclub or landscape shots.

4. Yup, we really are all talking about tech.

Unsurprising, the home of the Silicon Roundabout is obsessed with tech. Hashtags like #TechLondon, #SpeedsterIT, and #1EuropeanTechHubLondon prove it.
Tech, hipsters and big local news are all well and good. But we’ve also picked up two quirky facts about Hackney’s tweeters:
5. We cannot spell Shoreditch to save our lives.
Yes. Yes, there is an “e” there.
But apparently most people seem really keen to spell it “Shorditch”.
6. And you’re all tweeting a surprising amount about Islington.
We can only assume it’s in the context: “Hackney is SO much better than Islington”?
