Business owners in say new Victoria Park village parking restrictions in the area will harm local trade.

Hackney Council enforced controlled parking zone restrictions on Victoria Park and Lauriston Roads last Monday, after a consultation with residents approved the measures.

Jo de Guia, owner of Victoria Park Books, and a member of the Victoria Park Traders Association (VPTA), said that the 37 traders in the area were not consulted about the impact to their shops.

“There isn’t sufficient parking for our customers,” said Ms de Guia. “This has been the quietest week in a while. It was like a graveyard yesterday.”

The VPTA secured 700 signatures for a petition backing two-hour restrictions.

“There were flaws in the council’s consultation,” she said. “People didn’t get papers, only residents did. They only used the results of the voluntary consultation, and didn’t bother to engage with our campaign.”
