Locals will be able to buy affordable second-hand bikes at a series of pop-up markets across the borough this month.
The markets, run by cycling organisation Peddle My Wheels, will enable residents to buy high quality and affordable second-hand bikes.
The bike sale is supported by Hackney Council as part of a bid to get more people cycling.
Councillor Feryal Demirci, Deputy Mayor, said: “One of our main transport ambitions is to get even more people cycling and to continue to be London’s capital of cycling. This reclaims our borough from cars, improves air quality and helps to improve residents’ health.
“We’re always looking for more ways to make cycling as accessible as possible, and these pop-up markets provide an amazing way for people to pick up affordable serviced bikes.”
Philip Pearson, chair of Sustainable Hackney said: “We warmly welcome Hackney’s initiative as part of a green transport strategy for the borough. Cycling and walking are used for an increasing number of journeys and are becoming part of people’s ‘lifestyle’.
“But we hope the council will ensure that its bikes are serviced before they are sold, equipped with lights and a bell, and most importantly, an advice leaflet on safe cycling, such as advice on minimising the risks provided by the London Cycling Campaign.”
The council has said all bikes will be serviced, checked and tested before being sold.
The first pop-up market will be on 19 March at London Fields Primary School, followed by 21 March at Homerton Hospital, 26 March at Orchard Primary School and 31 March at Clapton Common.
The Homerton Hospital and Clapton Common markets are 10am-4pm, and the London Fields and Orchard primary schools markets are 8am – 4.30pm.
