Hackney Wick’s arty edge goes on display next week as local photographer Jorge Monedero launches his annual popup sale.
The popup sale will feature new photo-etchings, to be displayed for the first time, and a collection of photos of the borough.
“Most of the photos have been shot in Hackney”, he says. “I really think it has such an incredible energy and vibe. It’s not perfect for sure, but you don’t get it anywhere else.”
A self-described “half-Spanish, half-Hackneyite”, Monedero has lived locally since 2001. He has previously photographed the likes of Antonio Banderas and Princess Stephanie of Monaco, and his work has appeared in Vogue and Vanity Fair.
The photos– including a young art student dramatically posing on Hackney marshes, a series of striking black and white portraits, and abstract shots of refracted light – aim to capture the borough’s innovative spirit.
The exhibit also includes new photo-etchings, a process involving ultraviolet light to fix images onto metal sheets. It will feature two bodies of Monedero’s work: one from a photoshoot in Hackney Wick and another from a fashion show in Paris.
“I started this printing process a few months ago… in a world of fast consuming images and AI I’ve done the opposite and learned a printing process that takes hours – sometimes even days – to get right.”
This is the second annual popup sale Monedero has hosted at his studio. He invites visitors to “support a creative” and “take a piece of Hackney with them”.
The sale will take place from 28 to 30 November at Unit 18, Trafalgar Mews E9 5JG.
