The police “will stop at nothing” to find those responsible for a shooting in London Fields on Sunday night that left a woman in her 30s with life-threatening injuries, said detective inspector Matt Webb.
The victim is believed to be an “innocent bystander” who was caught up in an altercation between a group of approximately ten people, who appeared to be shooting a music video in Broadway Market, and another group who arrived at the scene, said the detective.
Police officers on the scene administered CPR on a 32-year-old woman while waiting for the London Ambulance Service. She was then taken to hospital with a gunshot injury and is now in a critical but stable condition.
Detective inspector Matt Webb, in an appeal for information, said: “Our investigation into this terrible crime continues at pace.
“We are working 24/7 and will stop at nothing to find the person or persons who left this woman so seriously injured.”
Police were called to Westgate Street at 20:52hrs on Sunday following reports of a shooting.
A Section 60 order, permitting police stop and searches, was authorised in areas of Hackney on Sunday night, according to Hackney Police.
The authorisation gives police officers the power to stop and search someone without needing reasonable grounds to suspect the person is in possession of a weapon. Hackney Police have not yet announced how long this will stay in place.
London Fields Primary School, which is situated on Westgate Street, remained closed on Monday, in response to police advice.
Teacher Max Lawson said in a statement that morning: “We apologise for the late notice and the inconvenience this will cause but for health and safety reasons we can not open the school.” The school reopened on Tuesday.
Detective Webb said, “Police must work with communities to catch criminals and this incident is an example of how important that is right now.
“Someone knows who did this; I say to those people, please do not help violent criminals by remaining silent.”
Kevin Flemen, secretary of London Fields User Group, told Hackney Post that residents are “shocked and saddened” by Sunday’s “terrible events.” “It is important at this time that policing resources can be focused where they are most needed, so that the perpetrators can be identified and brought to justice.”
This incident comes after a recent shooting in Homerton just over a month ago.
