Community organisation, De Beauvoir Welcomes Refugees, has been re-launched to help an Afghan family settle in Hackney, raising over £6,000 of a long-term £30,000 goal in the last two months.
The charity aims to get involved with the Home Office’s Community Sponsorship programme and have been fundraising with help from members of the community to raise an initial £9,000 for the programme. Fundraising methods included a book festival, sales on the Hackney Shopping Trails, a collaboration with Brixton Brewery, and public donations.
The group was originally created in 2017 to support a Syrian family, who still live in the area. De Beauvoir Welcomes Refugees’ team includes student Emily Young, who designed the logo and a technician who has been working with Care4Calais, a volunteer-run charity working with refugees in the UK and France. Additional support has been granted by the local church and the De Beauvoir Association.
De Beauvoir Welcomes Refugees had said they know from experience that funds are “crucial in order to provide the services these traumatised people need”. On their website, the organisation stressed the need for “practical financial support” because housing in the area is expensive.
