A Green Lanes church will host a series of migrant socials for asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable families.
The Green Lanes Methodist Church is in the initial stages of organising the weekly migrant socials at its recently opened new building in partnership with the Hackney Migrant Centre.
Volunteers will run the day, which will include CV advice, English language classes and knitting. A hot meal will also be provided.
Rev Cathy Bird said: “There is clearly a need for something of this sort of the area, and in this time of hostility to immigrants we want to provide a warm welcome to those from abroad.”
Since opening in 2008, Hackney Migrant Centre has started to struggle with increased demands for services. A spokesman from the centre said that over subscription was a worsening issue.
The partnership will offer a new place for homeless or vulnerable immigrants to relax on a Sunday.
Helen Hibberd, a paid worker at the Hackney Migrant Centre, said: “The Green Lanes project can offer something complementary to what we provide and in a wonderful space.”
Organisers expect the project to be running from early January next year.
