Musician Pete Doherty in surprise visit to Hackney play

An audience at the Rosemary Branch theatre was starstruck when Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty sauntered in casually swigging a pint of Guinness.

The former Libertines rocker took a seat to watch the opening scenes of Serendipity, a surreal hit from the Edinburgh Fringe that ran at the Rosemary Branch last week.

Jarrod-John du Plooy, marketing manager for the theatre, said Mr Doherty ditched his usual trilby for a huge black hat.

He said: “Just before the first performance he strolled in and walked around a bit, then sat down.

“It was a real surprise. He didn’t have his normal hat on – it looked a bit like something Amish farmers wear.

“Apart from that he was wearing black jeans, a black jacket and white T-shirt.”

Mr Doherty sipped on Guinness with a friend before walking out again.

The troubled songsmith, who celebrates his 30th birthday this Friday, recently said he draws fashion inspiration from the unlikely figure of Victoria Beckham.
