“Impassable” flooding blocks Hackney Downs Park underpass

Flooding from recent storms has blocked an underpass connecting Hackney Downs Park to high street, Amhurst Terrace.

The route is used by shoppers and commuters, with the alternative route adding five minutes to the journey.

The obstruction has also caused significant issues for disabled access, said resident Lindsey Glen: “[The flooding] makes it impassable for wheelchair users.”

This type of flooding has been a persistent issue, Mr Glen said.

Residents have since raised concerns with Hackney Council’s traffic department, Streetscene.

Councillor Sarah Young, Hackney’s cabinet member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, has requested Streetscene to guarantee “regular inspection” of water levels and the drainage system.

In response, Streetscene said “Network Rail visited the site approximately a year ago to assess options for addressing the drainage issue,” and “were expected to recommend a course of action.” The underpass runs under the rail line.

No action has yet been taken by Streetscene.
