A “jealous and controlling” teenager who put a firework through his ex-girlfriend’s letterbox has been sentenced to 12 months in a youth rehabilitation unit.
The 17-year-old began his campaign of harassment, bombarding the girl with Facebook messages and stalking her, after she broke up with him to escape his “controlling and jealous behaviour”.

Thames Magistrates Court sentenced the teenager, who can’t be named for legal reasons, after he put a lit firework through his ex-girlfriend’s letterbox in Homerton on 6 November last year, having harassed the victim for months prior to the incident.
The boy turned up at the victim’s flat, stole her mobile phone and assaulted her.
Sentenced to 12 months and handed a restraining order
He pleaded guilty to common assault but denied arson, and was handed a 12 month restraining order against the victim.
The teen was found guilty of common assault and arson and sentenced to 12 months in a youth unit, as well as four months with a tagged curfew, 100 hours community service and was ordered to give £100 compensation to the victim.
DC Jon Moseling, of Hackney’s Community Safety Unit, said: “Any form of domestic related crime will be vigorously investigated and offenders pursued.”
Since September, youth offenders in Hackney are helped by the Young Hackney rehabilitation scheme, where young people are trained in public services to cut their chance of re-offending.
