A beloved Hackney kebab shop has taken home the prestigious ‘Best Takeaway in London’ gong at the 2025 British Kebab awards.
The family-run “The Best Turkish Kebab”, a staple of Stoke Newington’s High Street, has been in operation since 1980. Voted one of the “top 10 in the country” at the inaugural British Kebab Awards in 2013, it has been visited by such luminaries as chef Ainsley Harriott, rapper Action Bronson, and Friends star David Schwimmer.
Longtime owner Mo Yaz said: “[This award] means everything. We’ve been here for 45 years, so I don’t think you can ask for more.”
The signature and award-winning item is a large doner kebab wrap, which costs £12 and comes with a selection of salad and an option of garlic and chilli sauce.
Yaz said the quality of his product distinguished it from competitors. “It’s not fatty, it’s not greasy. It’s just lean cuts of lamb.”
“Perfection is only temporary. We need to keep building on what we’ve achieved so far.”
He also cited the shop’s personal touch as central to its appeal. “It’s a community here,” he said. “We’ve been here for so long, and our shop runs like clockwork. Whatever they want, we give it to them. Over time, you build up a loyal customer base. We’re not your average high street shop.”
But Yaz warned against complacency: “The rent is due every day,” he said. “Perfection is only temporary. We need to keep building on what we’ve achieved so far.”
In any case, it seems its name is now official.
Stoke Newington, with a long illustrious history of producing quality kebabs, continues to strive for kebab excellence.
