A jogger who rescued a dog from drowning in Regent’s Canal has been hailed for his “extremely heroic” actions.
The man was running on the canal path last Sunday as Storm Emma battered the country, when he saw a dog struggling in the water.
“He just stopped, passed me his phone and jumped into the canal,” Kerry Sheldrick, who was walking Harry, a Shih Tzu crossed with a Cavalier King Charles, said. “It was amazing.”

Sheldrick, who lives near London Fields, described the mystery rescue man – who ran off without leaving his name – as white, of average build and in his 30s. She said the canal was partially frozen on Sunday and Harry, one of her mother’s two dogs, got into trouble because the water was so cold.
“The water was up to the guy’s neck,” Sheldrick said. “He passed Harry to me and they were both completely drenched.”
Sheldrick said she had never seen a dog jumping into the canal before and has no idea why Harry jumped in. After being rescued Harry was wrapped up in a scarf and was shivering and quaking for 20 minutes .
Sheldrick and her mother offered to buy the jogger a drink but he politely declined before running off without leaving any contact details.
“He’s a hero,” Sheldrick said. “I want to say ‘thank you’ to him, it’s really good to know there are such lovely people out there.”
