Hackney Community College may merge with Tower Hamlets College to offset the effects of government cuts.
The two colleges are seeking the views of students and staff over the form any merger would take.
A consultation document released on Tuesday stated joining forces would “bring about a more robust financial position. This will be particularly important given the high level of downward pressure on college income nationally.”
Shoreditch-based Hackney Community College was also the scene on Wednesday of a picket from members of the University and College Union (UCU) protesting against cuts that could shut a number of London further education colleges.
UCU secretary general Sally Hunt said: “The current cuts to adult education budgets are a devastating blow to colleges and will change the face of further education.
“Colleges need stable investment to continue to help people of all backgrounds fulfil their potential,” she added.
A spokesperson for Hackney Community College told the Hackney Post: “One of the overarching principles of the collaboration is to safeguard opportunities for students, and minimise job losses within the wider context of government funding reductions.”
