Get your bike fixed for free at the new Dr Bike clinic, which has recently opened at St Thomas’s Church in Cazenove. To adhere to government guidelines, it has moved to a larger location and cyclists must now book their spot online.
Derek Mullan, who runs the clinic, said he hoped that “the project will provide local residents with the confidence and knowledge to get cycling and keep cycling”. So far, the clinic has managed to help 80 residents.
“A broken bike is an obvious barrier to cycling,” Mullan explained, and “there was a clear demand from the local community to keep cycling through lockdown”. Discussing the council’s efforts to improve cycling conditions, Mullan said “we would also like to see Hackney’s low cost bike loan scheme back up and running”.
The project was supported by investment from Hackney Council alongside short-term funding from Cycling UK and the Big Bike Revival, allowing them to offer repairs to residents for free.
It comes amid a concerted push by Hackney Council to encourage more residents to choose bikes over cars or buses.
The clinic has opened as part of the Liberty Hall renovation project instigated by Clapton Commons, a community-led initiative and neighbourhood network.
