A borough-wide controlled drinking zone has been approved by the Hackney Regulatory Committee in a vote at the Town Hall this evening.

The plans will now go to a full cabinet vote before potentially being implemented by May 24.

The new rules would mean that police had the power to confiscate alcohol from anyone in a public place without providing a specific reason. Those that refuse to comply could face an on-the-spot-fine of £50 or arrest.

Full report to follow.
