A local charity, Sustainable Threads, is raising awareness of sustainable clothing. The organisation’s leader, Ruth Cava, explained “we are very much divorced from our waste.”
Ms Cava was a coat-maker for nine years before she realised that her “personal interest in sustainable issues were too big to ignore”. The charity leader left her job and received charity funding from the Local Community Resource Network (LCRN). Ms Cava’s ‘Sustainable Threads’ project started this month.
The community charity held its first event on 2 October, with the aim of educating people about different possibilities they could consider, before throwing away their clothes.
Ed Tombs, project manager of LCRN, explained that the charity exposes the consequences of wasting clothes, while proposing a solution to the consumers. These proposals include reducing purchases, looking to local shops for alterations and partaking in clothes-swaps (“swishes”).
Ms Cava wants to “work in the community to empower the public by raising awareness on sustainable issues”. One issue is that plastic (polyethylene terephthalate) is found in a large amount of clothing.
Sustainable Threads’ next event, a ‘Festival of Sustainable Fashion’ will be on 24 November.
