A burger bar in Stoke Newington added a flash of flair to the image of fast food on Monday with the hiring of a full time ‘burger artist’.
Loaded Burgers opened on Stoke Newington High Street on 5 September and had been advertising the position for two weeks. The chosen applicant, Daniel Bernal Sánchez, 22, from Benidorm in Spain, started his new job on Tuesday.
“I love it,” he said. “This is like my studio.”
Mr Bernal had previously worked at Loaded Burgers’s flagship Ilford branch, where all of the candidates for the role were assessed. Among the other applicants were several Subway sandwich makers.
“Their jobs are similar,” said restaurant manager Irshad Karim, who described the key task of his new charge as “burger assembly”.
“The chefs are the ones actually cooking the meat, which is then passed on to the burger artist. He will add his own creativity. He can play around with the menu and add suggestions.”
While Mr Bernal will be primarily concerned with visually bringing the food menu to life, he’s also responsible for the diner’s mixology. All of the cocktails are alcohol-free at the halal eatery. Mr Bernal can live without pork, but he admits that his own perfect burger is incomplete without one essential ingredient: meat.
Beyond this, his work will be guided by two vital principles: “It looks good and, of course, it tastes good too.”
