A walking group seeking to combat stigma and build a support network for people with mental health problems has come to Dalston, courtesy of Mental Health Mates.
Mental Health Mates is a campaign to create a network of mental health walks across the country offering support to those struggling with mental health problems.
Libby Brewster, its Dalston walk leader, said: “It provides a safe space and support for people who are experiencing mental health issues. A place that’s non judgmental, relaxed and a comfort to people.” She added that “physical activity is proven to improve people’s mental health and so is connecting with others.”
The walks offer more than just exercise, according to Jessica Webber, Ambassador for the Mental Health Mates network. “I have heard first-hand from walk leaders and participants how amazing they have found being part of a community.
“One of our leaders has even been inspired to become a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, a year after being suicidal.”
The MHM network started in 2016 and new initiatives have been started in cities across the world. The Dalston hub was founded in October and follows a route from Dalston Eastern Curve Garden to London Fields.
Ms Brewster, who left her last job as a result of mental health issues, said: “We’re constantly online and think we’re connecting with lots of people through Facebook and Twitter but we’re actually losing that physical connection.”
The walks take place on the second Tuesday of every month, with the next on 10 December.
