Pizza boxes are being used as canvasses to display artwork at an exhibition called “Can I get a slice” to raise funds for Hackney Foodbank.
The boxes, which have been decorated by 65 urban and street artists, are on display at Atom Gallery on Green Lanes, Stoke Newington until 23 November.
The exhibition features work from well-known contemporary artists such as Carrie Reichardt and Marty Thornton, as well as up-and-coming street artists from the local area. The pizza box prices vary between £25-£500 each.
“We’re a gallery with a social conscience,” said co-owner Richard Pendry. “We had the idea for this exhibition in July, and everyone we asked to get involved said yes.”
Hackney Foodbank operates four branches and has provided ingredients for over 100,000 meals since opening in 2012. The number of people using foodbanks in the borough has more than doubled in the past year following the controversial universal credit rollout.
With two-thirds of the pizza boxes still up for grabs, Pendry hopes to draw art lovers from Hackney and beyond. He is keen to raise as much money as possible for the Foodbank following the theft of a donations bucket from the gallery at the weekend.
Since opening on Green Lanes in 2016, Atom Gallery has held various exhibitions highlighting issues from mental health to the London housing crisis.
